In 2006, research conducted by UK based HR Management organisation Right Management revealed that when compared to six other industrialised nations, the British workforce was the least motivated, with less than a third of the people asked stating that they felt fully engaged and fulfilled at work. This shocking statistic translates per annum during Great Britain, into billions of pounds of lost revenue.

Now bear in mind the momentous economic downturn since the research was first published and it's safe to assume that this issue won't have improved significantly since. So what is the best way that you can make sure that your organisation doesn't decline with a demotivated and dispirited work force?

The response is quite simple, corporate team building.

There are masses of synonyms for these challenges. They can be called team building, corporate events, activities, challenges, team exercises, facilitated games, organisation team building, department team building but they all refer to the same ideal; that groups undertake an activity that takes them out of their usual working environment and gives them a task to complete.

The challenges are specifically designed to accelerate team cohesion, communication and confidence, to nurture the feeling of working together to accomplish a shared aim and to enable groups to realise that all members of the team have an integral part to play in achieving that aim. All of these attributes are equally desirable in the workplace and the research behind these challenges shows that a team who takes part in a company team building activity, is able to then translate these attributes successfully into their work.

What style of challenges can be organised?

The response is whatever you feel would be most enjoyable and effective for your team.

Team building activities have many positive effects on a team. It will lead to strengthening leadership skills amongst your team; it can improve communication between group and thus make a team more effective. It will accelerate self confidence amongst a group, group can be tutored how to negotiate more successfully, they will improve their judgement on matters and the talent amongst a team can be optimised all leading to an improvement in productivity and profitability.

With many specialist organisations now dedicated to providing organisations with a expansive selection of team building events at a cost that suits all budgets. Given the current economic circumstances and the de-motivated British workforce, the question you need to ask is not if your organisation can afford to arrange a corporate team building event, but can it afford not to?
