Internet shopping is not new anymore. Everyone has been there, and done it. There’s hardly one who possesses a valid credit card who hasn’t bought something online in the last year. But there’s more to Internet shopping than just auctions. There are many eBay alternatives that provide a new kind of shopping experience.

Unlike eBay which focuses on user run stores where users add products on sale or on auction, the new shopping model is to give the buyers complete information about the products like product specification, product reviews etc. Slowly this is becoming more popular than traditional auctions. Most eBay alternatives have this or a similar sales strategy.

While some eBay alternatives have totally spurned auctions, others have redefined auctioning to a new stage altogether. A popular new technique is penny auctioning, in this sort of auction, the price is only allowed to go up in small units. This attracts a lot of buyers who compete with each other to bid for the product.

Many eBay alternatives use auctions as a sales promotion tool. Products are held on auction and sold off at a low rate to attract buyers to the website. This way the website gets more visitors and gets talked about, ultimately creating more business for the participants.

But if you online transactions in their entirety; auctions have only a small percentage of the total sales. Most shopping websites and product sellers still follow a catalog approach in which they list the products at a certain price. This is a static sort of sales promotion, and the sellers will have no sudden spurt in sales. These eBay alternatives often concentrate on a specialized market or product niche to stay afloat.

These days almost every business is online, and most vendors are making their products available for sale from their websites. A huge number of buyers purchase from these sources. They are not eBay alternatives, and they are not competing with any shopping website. In fact they are run more like traditional stores or establishments, and there are hardly any auctions in this segment.

But that doesn’t mean you won’t get a good bargain. Sometimes these specialist websites offer very good prices, even better than discount sales from shopping websites. It just takes a little luck to find such an offer.

Shopping from a big website has its advantages. When you shop from eBay, or some of the bigger eBay alternatives, you’re assured that the website has a security policy, and is taking steps to make sure the auctions are held in a transparent manner. A smaller website may not have the desire or the expertise to implement good security. That’s why many buyers are vary of purchasing from a website that’s not big.

These days classifies too are becoming a major shopping source. Individuals who don’t believe in auctions, or don’t want to hold one advertise their wares in classified websites. Buyers who are interested in the products can call up the advertiser directly and the rest of the transaction is offline. Since the website has a very little role, or revenue to get from this, this is a very rare market positioning among eBay alternatives.
