If you are using a sinking line in deep water, use a short leader.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but whichever you decide to use you should be sure it is suited to the fish you wish to catch and is high in quality. The fly is meant to fool the fish, and low quality materials will not fool anyone. You have to make sure your fly is high enough in quality that it will actually fool the fish into biting.
If you are already experienced in fishing in freshwater then the transition to saltwater will not be too difficult, but you have to approach the task differently. Different techniques are required, and you should not waste your time by using the wrong equipment.
