Thanks to the millions of fans who enjoy placing wagers via Internet-driven resources, sports betting has become an incredibly popular and profitable industry that continues to grow at a very fast pace. While the list with popular sports that allow wagering is quite extensive, football has always been one of the leading betting options in the online betting community.

The National Football League draws in a lot of betting action from millions of sports fans from all around the world. Besides the inherent fun and exciting nature of football, NFL betting is pretty much straightforward, offers a good variety of wager types, not to mention that it packs a lot of potential for profit. However, to make the most of your NFL betting ventures and be able to pinpoint NFL Spreads that win, it is crucial to get a good understanding of NFL odds and guide your decisions based on them.

Just like with NFL scores and game statistics, you can find NFL odds in the newspapers or online, via dedicated sportsbooks. While finding the odds is easy, interpreting them is a different story, as this actually involves some effort from you. However, since accounting for the odds and lines will undoubtedly pay off eventually in your betting ventures, there is no reason why you shouldn’t allocate some of your time to understanding these indicators properly.

Instructions for reading and interpreting the odds:

1. Locate the NFL odds on the games you are planning to have action on. Starting with the preseason and all the way to the Super Bowl, every football game comes with its own lines and odds. To have an easier time separating winning NFL Spreads from bad ones, look for their underlying odds and lines in the newspapers or online and analyze them to find out where the value is.

2. Educate yourself on the different types of NFL odds available. Each competing team has a number of lines posted for every game, including “Straight-up Point Spread” and “Total – Over/ Under”, which are the two most common types of odds you will come across in your betting endeavors.

3. Start out by learning how to decipher Straight-Up Point Spread Odds. These odds are presented in either negative or positive amounts (e.g. Pittsburgh Steelers -7, Dallas Cowboys +7, respectively). The team with the negative amount is the favorite, while the one with the positive amount is the underdog. The numbers next to the “+” or “-“ signs indicate the amount you would need to subtract (favorite) or add to (underdog) the final scores if you chose to bet the point spread.

For instance, if in the example shown above Pittsburgh were to win 20-10 above Dallas, Pittsburgh bettors would collect on the bet. Conversely, if the Cowboys won or lost by a margin smaller than 7 points, Cowboy bettors would get to collect.

4. Familiarize yourself with Total – Over/ Under odds. Generally, any NFL odds of the kind are displayed to the right of the point spread in parentheses or with the “ov” abbreviation. Therefore, the Total – Over/ Under odds for the match between the Steelers and the Cowboys may either look like this: Pittsburgh Steelers (33) Dallas Cowboys, or like this: 33 ov, with the number “33” being the amount projected as the final total score in the game. If you were to bet on the game, you would have to guess whether the final combined score would fall under or over the amount specified.
