Internet Services in Costa Rica – A Look at Internet Cafés and Locales Offering Wireless/ Wi-Fi Access

As pointed out by a current study conducted by the Foro Económico Mundial (World Economic Forum), Costa Rica stands out as the most technologically advanced country in Central America. Moreover, it has also established itself as the seventh most developed country in Latin America and the Caribbean region, occupying a strong position just behind Mexico, Brazil, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Chile, with the latter name listed being at the top of the hierarchy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Costa Rica’s technological resources and wide variety of Internet services have rendered it an influential Central American authority, and this favorable renown has contributed to significant improvements in the international investment sector. In the near future, the country’s government is looking to further diversify and improve offerings with respect to Internet options, in the attempt to encourage more companies to invest in the Costa Rican field of IT.

At present, one of the most popular and highly requested Internet service Costa Rica solutions is based on VoIP technology. The market demand for VoIP packages is growing at a very fast pace, since VoIP solutions combine high transfer speed with reliability, convenience, and affordability. Other high speed Internet Costa Rica options include broadband (DSL and cable) and fiber-optic wireless, although the latter has a smaller coverage and, as we will discuss later on, is less secure than most of its counterparts.

For a resident or the owner of an offshore business seeking a competitive Internet solution, the main concern would be to find a solid Costa Rica ISP and seal the best long-term Internet deal possible. However, if you are only visiting Costa Rica and all you want is the ability to access your email every now and then during your stay there, a respectable Internet café may be more than sufficient for you.

Internet cafés are virtually everywhere, as even fast-food joints have one these days. However, despite the multitude of such venues throughout Costa Rica, chances are you will experience problems in terms of dependability of service. With most cyber and Internet cafés operating in the country, if the weather turns bad it can become difficult to stay logged on or even connect to the server.

If you travel with your laptop and at some point during your stay you decide that you need a high speed Internet Costa Rica connection, consider turning to a hotel or a similar locale for wireless/ Wi-Fi access. However, remember to ask how much the parlor charges for such services before using them, as prices can go up to $6 US for a 1/2 hr in some places.

Moreover, be warned that Costa Rica has quite an adept network of hackers/ crackers (most of them lurking by in San Jose downtown area), which are just waiting for a chance to scan Wi-Fi channels for passwords or credit card information from unsuspecting visitors. Despite all the efforts made by the local authorities to contain privacy infringement acts of the kind, security of connection apparently continues to be the weakest link of Internet service Costa Rica providers when it comes to wireless/ Wi-Fi channels, so make sure you account for this fact when surfing the Internet. To stay on the side of safety, avoid doing any financial transactions or sending any confidential emails while in an Internet Café or another similar locale that offers access to a wireless or WI-FI connection.
