Stress is a dreadful thing. It comes uninvitingly in our daily lives, pulling all of our nerves and testing us how long our patience is and how strong our threshold can hold. However, it always seems that there is nothing we can do to handle much of the stress that comes from our home, from our social lives and, most especially, from our work. And that goes double for an agent in a Philippine call center.

Scientists attribute stress from a number of various aspects and factors in the environment and as well as the psychological build of a person and his personality. This ranges from simple irritation and annoyance to unavoidable situations like the nature of one’s job. Since call centers mostly work on demanding night shifts brimming with noise, voices and telephone rings, it would be no wonder if one or two employees get sick, on an absentee roll or even crack under pressure. There are, however, safety precautions to manage and ease of the headache and dizziness.

Recognize where the stress is coming from.

Managing stress starts by taking control of one’s actions. As the saying goes, if you don’t like what you are doing, change the way you think about it. Even though this isn’t easy as it sounds, it is proven to work. As any agent would know, one of the hardest things about the job in any Philippine call center is not about the equipment nor is it about the night shifts but rather it is about the stress in which agents have to handle within the call center environment. But what other stressors are there? It maybe your procrastination at work or maybe even your stress inducing thoughts, feeling and behaviors that cause the stress meter to go up. Whatever the reason, it is important to know which thing that stresses your life in order to manage them.

Know yourself. To know which things are not good to keep, which should be avoided, which should be maintained and which should be kept to a minimum is the key to starting stress control. You have to know where to look. In order for you to do this, ask yourself the following questions:

1. How do you define stress? When do you feel it?
2. How do you work? How do you thing it has something to do with the work?
3. Do you love your work? If you don’t how do you propose to enjoy it? Do you think you are really made for the job?
4. How do you cope with stress? Do you think it has something to with your habits?
5. Consider your other habits or vices. Consider even the people you talk to. Do you think it’s the cause of stress?

Be cautious and conscious about who you are and what you do. Until you know a little bit more about yourself, any measure of stress management won’t work out the way you plan it to work. Remember the best way to adapt in any situation knows how to go about it after identifying the problem.
