Elearning companies and institutions rely on the expertise of subject experts, developers, writers and graphic designers in developing online courses for distance learning students and company trainees. In adapting an existing course into an online synchronous or asynchronous learning model, the educator plays most of the vital roles.

Here are just some of the roles they play:
1. Teacher or Lecturer – In a traditional classroom setting a teacher’s job does not start and end inside the campus. Teachers play a variety of roles such as preparing instructional materials, planning the lessons, delivering lectures, checking test papers, computing grades, etc. Online teachers and lecturers basically do the same thing. In a movie set analogy, they are the directors. They play a large part in the success of any online elearning course. They can use a variety of tools to help them effectively deliver the lessons like making use of webinars.

2. Course Architect – Although there are teachers who teach courses designed by other people, there is great pleasure in a teacher delivering his or her own work to students even if they only meet virtually. Developing an original curriculum requires much research and study that some courses are best taught by the teacher who designed it.

3. Author and Editor – Building a course require a great deal of writing proficiency. Educators can be called upon to write the course content that the students would be referencing. Each article or content would be building blocks that make up the whole course so the educator must keep in mind the course objectives and drive their content towards attaining those goals. In elearning companies or educational institutions with limited budgets, they may also have to proofread, edit or revise their work as needed. Provided that the educator is a good course designer, there may be a lucrative career for him or her as a freelance writer specializing on educational materials.

4. Tech Support – Online lecturers or educators are not required to know about the more technical aspect of online learning but it surely helps if they can assist the students when technical difficulties are experienced. Especially in facilitating live sessions, it would be more convenient if a technical issue can be addressed immediately.

5. Coordinator – An important aspect of elearning or traditional learning is the exchange of ideas and opinions. Educators act as facilitators to discussions concerning the lesson or topic be it in forums, chat rooms or bulletin boards. The discourse should involve interactivity between students or trainees in order to promote an intellectual virtual community.

6. Guidance counselor – In lieu of a professional guidance counselor, educators can substitute the role through development of relationship between educator and students. Students have to be able to communicate with the teacher or lecturer privately through personal messaging systems, email correspondence or telephone if issues or problems are more of a personal nature. When students have problems that may or not affect their studies, educators should at the very least listen and sympathize with their students because at the end of the day, all of them are human beings who sometimes needs someone to stop and listen.
Author Resource:- A computer graduate and loves to travel. Reading current news in the internet is one of his past times. Taking pictures of the things around him fully satisfies him. He loves to play badminton and his favorite pets are cats and walk with them in the park with some dogs.
