The company you are working for is mass hiring for an upcoming huge project and you are tasked to come up with a proposal plan for the immediate training of the new recruits. Choosing a pedagogical program is not a walk in the park, there are a lot of things that should be consider before finally deciding on a certain schooling system. A fellow co-worker of yours suggested electronic learning, well it is ideal for fast and cost efficient training, however before you write your proposal plan for such methodology think it out first. There are many factors which you should consider before proposing elearning for the company’s training program.
Gather information about the company’s guideline for the training program. Ask questions like: “How huge is the number of trainees?” “What kind of learning content it needs?” “How long will the training program go?” “Does it require a lot of demonstration or hands-on lab work?” By answering these questions, you will a have a full grasp of the requirements of the company’s proposed training program. All you need to do now is to analyze if computer-based learning is the right teaching tool for the company’s massive hiring and training.
First determine the number of trainees. If the number of participating learners is quite huge and most of them are in different locations, then perhaps the virtual classroom is the right facility for the training you required. However, if the target audience has widely varying needs then prior knowledge computer-based learning might not be the solution for the company’s schooling agenda. If the learning scheme requires its learners to study certain level of content, implementing online learning might be a long and grueling process. Another thing to consider is the content to be delivered it; if it is text-heavy then trainees will find it hard to study. Imagine continuously reading a text-heavy education module on a computer, the learners will grow weary reading these modules making the tutoring process ineffective.
Now if the training is meant to motivate or encourage the target audience aside from enhancing their skills. Online learning might not be the right system for the project. Since learners will be studying in the virtual classroom where there is no physical or personal interaction, changing their perspective or attitude will be extremely difficult if not impossible. Machines are emotionless contraptions, what makes you think they can teach emotional change? Another thing you should consider is, if the content requires a lot of live demonstration or hands-on lab work. If it does, you should consider other methods. A simulated video version of live demonstration can not beat the real one no matter how accurate and or how good it is.
There is no perfect training or learning method. As history has proven it, each of them have their own pros and cons. Elearning is the same; however, you can modify it to suit the needs of the company. It does not need to be purely text-based, incorporating animated clips, video footages and other multi media component could enhance its effectivity.
