Food is usually part of the adventure of going on vacation in exotic locations such as Barbados. From quaint Barbados small hotel restaurants to local eateries in different towns, food can be obtained easily, and enjoyed immensely because of the fact that local cuisine is the best way to get to know a culture. However, this is not necessarily always the case because some people choose to restrict their diets out of principle, belief, health, and so on.

Since a lot of people are becoming more health conscious nowadays, the vegetarian and vegan diets are no longer uncommon. However, traveling with such diets can be challenging if one does not know where to look for the right kind of dishes. Luckily for Barbados vacationers, the island is no stranger to healthy eating lifestyles. Here are some of the best restaurants, eateries and stores that cater to people who live by vegetarian and vegan diets.

For those who desire more casual dining or fast stops, these are the places that come highly recommended:

(1) Jenn’s Health and Beauty – This is a health food store located on the left hand side opposite RBTT Bank in Bridgetown. The fun fact is that it is a grocery store, book store and café in one. Since it serves food beginning 7:30 AM, it is perfect for visitors looking for a good, healthy breakfast after getting some early exercise. They serve yummy treats like veggie sausages and tofu scramble. From 11 in the morning, Jenn’s starts serving various Bajan dishes like stews, soups and so on. Be informed that seating is the main challenge since it is quite popular.

(2) Indian Grill – this restaurant is located just on the tip of Bridgetown and is in Baystreet. Their roti is their best seller and patrons claim that it is one of the few places who get the taste and texture just right. Here, they make 14 different types of roti, both for vegan or vegetarians, and meat eaters.

(3) Bubba’s Sports Bar – Strictly speaking, this sports bar in Worthing, Christ Church is not a vegetarian or vegan place. It is a regular place that serves regular food with meat, butter, cheese—you name it. However, it is home to one of the island’s best veggie burgers. Made out of fresh vegetables, they serve the patty with fries and a memorable tasty sauce that makes the dining experience truly remarkable.

There would be visitors who prefer self-catering vacations in a Barbados small hotel or apartment hotel and cook their own food. The best places to buy ingredients for vegan or vegetarian dishes are:

(1) Super Centre – This grocery store carries majority of the common ingredients necessary for vegan and vegetarian dishes. It is basically an Americanized establishment and practically has everything you can find overseas except for ‘tempeh’. They sell basic brands for these diets as well as fresh organic produce like mangoes.

(2) Pricesmart – a lot of people are familiar with this place and it is a membership only grocery store. Located in St. Michael and is 2 minutes away from Super Centre, the Pricesmart in Barbados features a great roti place and a restaurant that conveniently serve vegan and vegetarian options.

There are a lot more establishments scattered around the island. The best way to find out where these places are is to consult locals or look them up on the internet.
