What are some of the common terms used in professional wrestling and what do they mean? Ever turned on the television and found a professional wrestling match taking place and had no idea what was going on. Seems that there are just a lot of people jumping around all over the place yelling and screaming at each other and the fans and referee? This is the world of professional wrestling. While it is not everyone’s favorite thing you can not dismiss the fact that it becomes more and more popular throughout the world.

All the words and terminology they use and none of it making any sense to you? So to stay up with the play and be able to enjoy the matches perhaps with your children then it is time to learn some of the more common phrases. These simple terms should give you an insight into what wrestling terms are and perhaps now you will better be able to understand the sport of professional wrestling.

Heel - This means a wrestler who is a bad buy or disliked by the audience or spectators.

Face – This is the basically the opposite of a heel. A Face is the good guy and most commonly the favorite. The term turn face refers to when a wrestler goes from being a heel to a face - they turn face.

Finisher or Finishing move – this relates to a specific move often unique to specific wrestlers in that they use this move to defeat their opponent.

Foreign object – just like it sounds this relates to any object that is not normally included in a match. These can be anything from chairs to chains and basically are a way for the wrestlers to cheat in the match in that they will use these foreign objects against their opponents behind the back of the referee.

Turnbuckle – this is the metal coupling which keeps the ropes together on the corners of the ring or the squared circle. The turnbuckle keeps the tension in the ropes. There are four turnbuckles in each pro wrestling ring.

Dark Match – this is a live match that will not be shown on television.

Card – this refers to the bouts scheduled for any particular event.

The Squared Circle – This is a reference to the ring itself.

Ropes – this refers to the ropes around the ring, generally there are 3 ropes.

Roster – this is a list of the wrestlers that are due to be on a professional wresting show.

There are other terms used in relation to the match itself and some of these are:

Submission – this is where a wrestler finds himself in a hold that they can’t get out of and must tap out to be released from the wrestling hold.

Tap Out – this is where the wrestler who is held in submission hit his hand on the mat to stop the match.

Pinfall – This is where one wrestler pins his opponent down in some way for a 3 count by the referee.

Countout – This is where the referee counts one or both wrestlers out for a count of 10. If this happens where both are counted out then the match is a draw.

This form of professional wrestling is of course completely different to any Olympic form of professional wrestling well almost entirely different. Both forms have rules and regulations but you are very unlikely to find any chance of an Olympic wrestler using a foreign object during a match. This form of professional wrestling has become more and more popular over the years and learning some of the terminology will help you understand what is being played out when you see the matches either live or on television. There are of course other terms and new ones often pop up depending on who it is that is the current flavor of the month in relation to wrestling circles.
