Visiting Barcelona for many people is not about Gaudi, shopping and beaches, they are attracted to the city for its nightlife and on any night of the week you will find the place buzzing with travelers, visitors, students and locals. To cater for them there are a wealth of nightclubs, bars, entertainment, and dining venues and the city has various areas that appeal to all kinds of people. Here are a few tips on what each has to offer.

Famous for its nightlife, it is not surprising that the variety and number of bars and pubs covers practically every theme and appeals to all tastes and budgets. Barri Gňtic & Las Ramblas is popular with all types as it is located right in the heart of the city and has a lively atmosphere that appeals to tourists, as well as the locals. The area is full of trendy clubs, bars and pubs, particularly in the gothic area, and you will find a great range of chic spots mixed amongst the usual tourist places.

Maremagnum is a waterfront shopping center with hundreds of shops and clubs to explore. Busy day and night, you'll find everything here from stylish bars and techno clubs to Irish pubs and Salsa, it's quite easy to party here until morning as some of the clubs stay open until 6am.

Port Olímpic is a stretch of clubs in the Olympic yachting marina and where to go if you are into clubbing all night. This is a great location in summer as you can sit outside on the outside terrace and watch the people go by as you relax with a cocktail or two.

L'Eixample is to the north of the city centre and another fashionable area with great bars and clubs, there is a big gay scene too.

Bars in Barcelona are normally open until 2 to 3am, although there are plenty of late licensed bars that stay open until the metro starts operating again at 5am. There are bars with a small dance floor or a restaurant, and some have live music. They tend to get busy after 12.30 as the Spanish are night owls. They call themselves bars however there is little difference between them and the clubs apart from higher prices and they don't stay open as long.

Clubs tend to open their doors between 11pm and 1am, although they won't get busy 2 or 3am. Watch out for the PR people who hand out free entry passes to some of the biggest name clubs in the bars, you'll easily see them in the city centre. They give you free or discounted entry to clubs that generally have expensive entrance fees and drinks so can save you a lot of money.

The clubs start to close at 5am, some at 6 or 7am, but don't despair you can still carry on partying as there's always a ready crew handing out even more flyers for the afterclubs which stay open until the afternoon. Back to the appartment for a few hours sleep and soon it's time to start all over again!

If you want to taste some of the local culture then there are always the local hang outs, these bars are packed with old Spanish people playing cards and there will be no loud music or bad behavior here.

People generally go to Barcelona for the clubbing scene. There is a particularly strong house and electro scene, which is reflected by the number of clubs that keep that vibe alive all week. There are not too many live music venues in the city, however rock and metal fans, and hip hop and indie kids are also represented, and Latin clubs with their salsa, meringue, samba and other funky beats are popular.

Planning a weekend clubbing in Barcelona will definitely be great fun, consider booking your stag or hen night here, or just bring a group of friends who are into the same kind of music as you. A cheap way to travel is to rent an apartment for the weekend as the more of you there are, the cheaper it works out. Look online for a good deal and have a great time!
